Last April I set out to see Florist – all praise the glory of Emily A Sprague – with absolutely no knowledge of the support act that night, though I did like their name, Porridge Radio. The performance was true of the origins of the act as it was simply the effervescent Dana Margolin performing alone, that’s how Porridge Radio began before it became a fully fleshed-out four piece. The performance was stunning, Dana’s voice was violently raw and the lyrics were either discomforting or hilarious. Dana spent the rest of the evening sat in the corner slowly demolishing a bottle of wine alone while watching Florist on stage, it did nothing but add to the mystery.
After seeing Dana, I went home and checked out the work of the band online and came across their only album to date, the glorious pop punk album ‘Rice, Pasta and Fillers.’ While I love that album and still listen to it regularly today, it was obviously a low budget recording and I was desperate to hear what the band sounded like when they had a full studio behind them.
Today that wish comes true with new single ‘Give / Take’. Within seconds you’re aware that this new professional sheen hasn’t caused the band to lose any of their edge, as Dana weaves a beautifully droll vocal over guitar and drums. The song is largely about indecision, Dana starts coolly presenting different points of view before her mind is at war with itself by the end. The instrumentation mirror that dissatisfaction as the guitars go from a strum to a squall and the drums go from a thud to a crash. It’s a fantastic first taste of the music they’ve been able to produce now they’ve got the backing they deserve. I can’t wait to hear more.
