New song: Olden Yolk – Grand Palais

The singles, the final one of which drops today, from Olden Yolk’s debut album ‘Living Theatre’ perfectly showcase the New York duo’s aptitude for diversity. Lead single ‘Cotton and Cane’ was a straight-up slice of dreampop, follow up ‘Distant Episode’ was a earthy, whirring ballad, while final single ‘Grand Palais’ gives into their more fuzzy, psych-rock tendencies.

For ‘Grand Palais’ songwriting duo Shane Butler and Caity Shaffer were joined by percussionist Booker Stardrum – pretty great name for a drummer right? It’s Stardrum’s *ahem* drums that drive this track, their skittling nature adding a titivating undertow to Butler’s trudging guitar and Shaffer’s dreamlike backing vocals.

‘Grand Palais’ is metamorphic. Listeners are steered from one psychedelic stop to the next until glitter is quite literally coming out of your ears. Weaving vocals, intoxicating solos and stirring synthesis make for a song that wouldn’t sound out of place on ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club.’ Mind-bending stuff.
