Welsh-blooded, South Londoner Castorp’s new single ‘Last Night on Earth’ nestles wonderfully between stargazing glam and slumbering indolence. With verses made up of stop-start drums and half-arsed guitars, and choruses that hoover you up with their sheer showiness, ‘Last Night on Earth’ could not be a song of bigger parallels.
Vital to holding such opposing sides together is the possession of a hugely versatile voice. Luckily that comes naturally to Steffan Davies, the IRL name of Castorp, who channels Jarvis Cocker and Leonard Cohen with his lothario-like croon. Of the song, Davies says “It’s a call out to the hermit in the woods to come out of their cave.” I think we’ve just seen the light.
